They Die Today

December 3, 2011 by Animal Resources

While I was transporting the other dogs to Irvine I received a call that they were having a big kill at the Camarillo shelter on Friday. To save who we could, it was decided that we needed to pull 3 from the shelter that day. Since I was in Irvine and not available, Kelly, our wonderful volunteer, raced to the shelter and did the pull. Since all three were sick she took 2 to the vet hospital for an overnight stay and one stayed at the shelter till I could go by on Saturday afternoon, pull that one out, go to the vet hospital, pull those 2 from there and transport all 3 to the Blue Cross Vet Clinic in North Hollywood so we could begin treatment of kennel cough.

This is the type of pressure we have on us all the time. It seems that the shelter is always issuing ultimatums to pull now or they will die today. Then of course we have to scramble to place these guys wherever we can on very short notice. It truly is amazing that we can pull this off as often as we do. But the price these volunteers pay is high, both in their personal and professional lives. The stress is unrelenting and it seems that it doesn’t get any easier for any of us. We have all seen so many good dogs die, it really can be so heartbreaking.

Transport

December 2, 2011 by Animal Resources

When I received a request to transport 4 dogs, spread out over 300 miles and have them at a location by 9am on Saturday 12/3, I knew the only way was to do it over 2 days using one overnight foster to make it happen. As always, people are more than willing to do whatever they can to help get these dogs get adopted. So on Friday 12/2 I drove out to Lancaster, way out on Avenue H, to the T.A.N.A. Foundation facility and picked up the white fluffy named Skippy, and transported her to Alanna in Sun Valley for her overnight visit. I needed to be back there at 6am on Saturday morning to pick up, not only Skippy, but a little sweet momma pittie that was also going. Well, I was there bright and early on Saturday morning and loaded everyone up for the next leg of the trip which was in Newport Beach. There we stopped at Second Chance Rescue to load 2 pitties and from there we headed to Irvine for the biggest adoption event of the year in that area. Everyone made it safe and sound and on time. I then turned them all over to P.J. from the Little Red Dog Rescue. Since P.J. is the prime mover of this little adventure, we owe her a tremendous thank you for all she has done to get these guys a chance on maybe finding their forever homes. Thank you P.J. for all you do.
