Her First And (Almost) Last Christmas

December 24, 2011 by Animal Resources

Today being Christmas Eve we knew we were up against long odds in finding a rescue for this little 5 month old puppy. All day long Maripat worked on trying to find a rescue. Trying to get people to the phone on this particular day is nearing on impossible. Still she kept the pressure on and finally found a rescue up in Washington who agreed to take her. At 5 minutes to 4:00 p.m. she called me and wanted to know if I could make it to the shelter by 4:00 p.m. as that is when the shelter said they would kill her. Well, maybe if there is no one else on the road. I ran and jumped in the van and took off for the shelter in quite a hurry. I got there at 4:10 p.m. Too late the staff said, everyone is gone home to celebrate Christmas in there nice warm homes. Well a few words were exchanged with the night staff and I left very upset that we had lost another great dog to a world who doesn’t care. Merry Christmas. As I was driving down the road, I received a call from the shelter staff that I could come back and pick her up as they were completing the paperwork as we spoke. I made a u-turn and high-tailed it back and wanted to be there as fast as possible before they changed their minds. As they were leading her out from medical she was so happy and full of life, not realizing just how very close she came to the rainbow bridge. As puppies will do and act, she didn’t have a care in the world and just loved on everyone. I loaded her up as fast as we could and sped up to a foster’s home in Ojai who had agreed to her staying a few days till we sort this all out and get her ready for her long trip north. At least now maybe this time next year she will have a far better Christmas with a loving family in Washington. We all hope so.
