3 Rotties Off To Sac Town - January 31, 2012

Early Tuesday morning I went back to Baldwin park to try and get the rotties pulled and on the road to Sacramento and their new home. As luck would have it, the staff on duty were very cooperative and helpful and we got all the paperwork done and pull fees paid and it was time to load.
605 and the younger female were no problem. Up and in and waiting to go. Maria, not so much. First she starts growling at the staff. Then they used a catch pole on her to secure her. That did nothing for her mood. But, she was trying to be cooperative, I don’t think she really knew what was going on and was a little defensive about it. After we got her loaded, she was fine. On the long drive up, they were all very quiet, there was not a peep from any of them the whole trip. Upon arrival, each got to be unloaded into a very large play area by themselves to just unwind from the trip. They all were just great and were glad that the long ride was now over. Hopefully the wait for a new home won’t be long. We will keep our fingers crossed.

Can Can And Chico - January 27, 2012

It has taken longer than normal to get these two guys started on their journey. First Chico had a bad case of kennel cough and spent all his time at the vet hospital trying to get better (he's all better now). He fast became a favorite and many tears were shed when he left - read more about Chico here. Can Can has been overstaying his welcome at the Simi holding facility because our normal ride to Phoenix had a schedule change and we all had to readapt to it. We now have him on the first ride out. Both were very tired being cooped up in kennels for so long, they just wanted to go. Somewhere. Well they are on the road now and at least they are alive. Same can’t be said of others that came in the shelter about the same time.

Chico and Can Can have been recuperating from kennel cough both are now healthy and will start their journey to rescue in Phoenix
Chico and Can Can will be available for adoption from a rescue in Phoenix Chico and Can Can will be available for adoption from a rescue in Phoenix

We Weren't Feeling Good Today - January 21, 2012

As you can see from the photo, Liselle was not feeling well. She is about to give birth to her puppies and on top of that she has kennel cough. Poor girl really was not at her best. The staff carried her out and gently put her in the kennel and we made her as comfortable as we could for her ride to the vet's office where she will be staying for a while. How long I don’t know, given her complications. I am sure we will be seeing her again with her little ones in tow. Sweet Cheeks is the little brindle pup that I also pulled and took him to a different vet's office. He also has kennel cough, but he was still going strong and everyone at the office fell in love with him. What’s not to love about a puppy?

Liselle has kennel cough as is about to give birth. She was pulled from the Camarillo shelter and will be staying at a vet. Sweet Cheeks is a puppy that also has kennel cough, he was pulled from the Camarillo shelter and brought to a different vet.

Literally One Hour From Dying - January 20, 2012

Meet Chico, a pit-basset hound mix that I pulled from Camarillo on Friday evening at 6pm. He was scheduled to be killed at 7pm according to the staff. Yes, just killed. No big deal, just another dead dog. One of too many from that shelter. Where will it end? When people spay and neuter their pets, that’s where it starts. Until then all we can do is save one dog at a time. But that just isn’t good enough for the ones left behind. They're dead now. It’s after 7pm.

Three Down, One To Go - January 13-14, 2012

On Friday I received a request to transport 3 pitties from the Lancaster shelter to Katella Animal Hospital in Anaheim. Well I raced out to the shelter and as usual not everything went according plan. Two of the pitties needed waivers signed and they would not release them. So I pulled Wilbur and took him to the Katella Animal Hospital and didn’t know what was to be done about the others. I was told by Michele that I would need to go back on Saturday and get the other two. In the meantime, it was requested that I go ahead and pull Peanut (English bulldog) while I was there. He would be going to Katella Animal Hospital also. Ok, we can do that. I went back on Saturday and tried to pull both pitties and managed to get one, who was a bait dog and was very skittish and unsure of himself. Well I loaded both Iffy and Peanut up and off we went for another trip to Katella Animal Hospital. Remember these trips are 280 miles each, so they are an all day event. So now we have 3 out of 4 and looks like I will be heading back Monday or Tuesday for the 4th dog. If there had been just a little bit of care at the shelter, two of these trips could have been avoided.

Have To Get It Done, Now! - January 10, 2012

Two of our dogs will be going on a Oregon transport Wednesday and need health certificates before loading time. They asked me if I could pick them up at the Simi holding facility, drive them to the Calabasas Vet Clinic, get them inspected, get their health certificates, get them reloaded and be back at the shelter by 5pm closing time. Sure I said and, guess what; we did it with 15 minutes to spare. But not without the very helpful staff at the clinic. They were great; fast and efficient. Tomorrow I will be picking them back up for their long trip north and I will have pictures then. Just wasn’t time today.

The One That (Almost) Got Away - January 9, 2012

Meet Hazelnut, the one that got away but was refound the next day. I picked her up Monday evening at the Camarillo Shelter to take her to the Vet in Westlake village because she had kennel cough - as most do now a days. When I was off-loading her, she bolted right out of the kennel and was off like a greyhound. No way was I going to catch her. I looked for a few blocks around and saw no sign of her. We posted flyers in the neigborhood and lo and behold, someone had found her, just a few blocks from the Vet's office. She is now at the Vet's office safe and sound, thanks to a wonderful anonymous animal lover in that area. A big thank you to that person, from all of us.

Chico Had The Sniffles - January 8, 2012

On Friday the Camarillo shelter staff let us know that Chico had come down with kennel cough and could not be sent to Simi that day as planned. I agreed to stop by the shelter Saturday at 8am to transport him to a vet hospital in North Hollywood on my way to Devore. Well, things don’t always go as planned and the staff wasn’t going to release him till 9am. Too late for me, as I had the other commitment. So Chico stayed at the shelter another day until I could pull and transport him on Sunday. And that’s what I did on Sunday. Hopefully it is a minor case and he will be all better and ready for his upcoming trip to Arizona next week. We will have to wait and see.

Chico came down with kennel cough so was pulled from the Camarillo shelter and taken to a Vet in N. Hollywood, hopefully he will be healthy to be transported to a rescue in Arizona next week

Can They Be Saved? - January 7, 2012

On Thursday I was asked if I would take a mommy Chow mix and her 3 pups to Sacramento to be placed with Cheryl at Adopt A Chow. I said of course I would, if you can arrange a puller on this short notice. Joan did, and the rest is history. I showed up at Devore Animal Shelter at 10am on Saturday and Pat, from a local rescue that volunteered to pull, was also there. She filled out all the paperwork and by 11am I was on the road to Sac-town with the mom, her pups and one extra 8 month old chow that we just couldn’t leave behind. I called Cheryl on him and she said it was ok, so we loaded him up too. What’s one more considering what his alternative was? I do know they all were on that day's list to be put down, so it was today or never. Thankfully all came together and they are now up north and safe. I arrived back in Camarillo about 2am and had a 10am appointment at the Camarillo shelter on Sunday. That’s another story.

No, It's Not Mars - January 6, 2012

Late Friday night I had to pull 3 pitties from the Camarillo shelter just before closing and transport them the holding facility in Simi for their stay of about 10 days or so. The red photos are from the only light source being the halogen night lights which give the red appearance. Maybe in this case the saying of, better red than dead, might be true.

Meet Rosco And Hershey - January 5, 2012

I transported these two on Thursday from Simi Valley; Hershey was at the Simi holding facility and Roscoe was at a foster's (Kim) and was brought to the holding facility by Kim. After a long goodbye and a few tears, I loaded them up for the drive to meet Glen in Baldwin Park. Since we had some time to while away before Glen showed up, I made a detour to the Handsome Dam Recreation Area to allow them some walk time before their trip to Phoenix and then on to Tucson. They really enjoyed it there. Even though I couldn’t allow them off leash they did like all the walking and marking of territories that they could. I think it was maybe a first for them to be in such a nice area. Maybe the only thing they ever knew was a back yard. Hard to say, but I do know they enjoyed it. That’s what counts.

A Little Brown Fur-Ball - January 2, 2012

This little guy is so cute and he just wanted to go, like, outta here! His name is Cocoa. His color, brown, is also unusual for a Lhasa Apso. A good grooming and he will look totally different. I transported him down to Pet Adoption Rescue in Canoga Park and there was not a peep out of him the whole way. He was so quiet and well behaved. Sometimes you just have to wonder why someone would turn in such a cute, sweet little guy. What were you thinking people? You won’t find better than this little one.

Remember Maddie? - January 1, 2012

She was the little poodle that we adopted out at the La Reina school event back in early November. Her mom, Darlene, sent me some updated photos and described how well she is doing and how everyone loves her so much. Maddie was very skinny and not well groomed when I first met her at the shelter. But I knew she potential to be a real family dog. And I guess I was right. Hope you had a Merry Christmas Maddie, and I am sure it was the best you ever had. Thank you Darlene for the updates.

Maddie is thriving in her new home Thank you for the updates on Maddie, Darlene Maddie is a well-loved, loving family dog
