Quarantined - August 28, 2011

This little guy came into Animal Control at Death's door step. He was very sick and weighed very little. The medical staff nursed him back to life with a lot of love and antibiotics. Today I pulled him and transported him to a rescue in Mission Hills in the valley. All is well for him.

BUT, his little cell mate about the same age was being visited by a potential private adopter and the little guy scratched the person. So what does the staff do? Put the little guy in 10 days quarantine. Anyone who has dealt with puppies knows they scratch and bite. Goes with the territory. Can you imagine how long 10 days is to a pup? Someone there needs to get a dose of common sense. Totally uncalled for. I had them put a note in his file that I will pull him at the end of the quarantine period, if he is still alive, and take him to a rescue. Let’s see in 10 days how it turns out.

A Journey That Took An Hour, Lasted A Day And A Half - August 24, 2011

Sometimes I feel I am a training aid for Animal Control as to what can go wrong, goes wrong with me. I arrived at 3:30 on the 23rd to pick up these 7 about to be killed dogs from Animal Control and after finishing all the paperwork, waited in the parking lot for 1 ½ hrs for loading. Checked 3 times, they will get right on it. Never did. Finally at 5:20 enough was enough. I can’t make the delivery because the receiving rescue will be closed. Just not enough time. I told them I will return in the morning and I was not happy that the dogs had to spend another night in the kennel. What was I to do. Nowhere to delivery them to. I came back at 9:00am the 24th and everyone helped me load so these guys could finally get out of there. And yes they arrived at Ventura Highway Luxury Boarding for Dogs in Ventura where they will be adopted out through their rescue CaboDogz.com by Mindy and her wonderful crew. A trip of 25 miles, did take a day and a half to make.

The Never Ending Story - August 24, 2011

After delivering the dogs to Mindy’s I had to proceed directly to Carls Boarding in Santa Paula and collect Bacardi for the meet up with a transporter from the valley who was going to drive them to Long Beach where they will meet up with a transporter going north to Canada. Along the way I stopped by Irma’s Last Green Mile Rescue and collected the 4 fuzzies that had a great time at her place. She bathed and trimmed them down as best she could and did an outstanding job with these little guys. They really, really, didn’t want to leave her place. Probably the best care they have ever received. I waited while Irma said goodbye to each and every one and if dogs could cry, I am sure a tear was shed as we drove away.

Thank you Irma for all your hard work and I know the sadness you felt as we were leaving. They will always remember you.

Helen of Troy - August 22, 2011

Like her name sake, this girl also launched a thousand ships, but ours will be filled with legal papers. Seems that Animal Control in Ventura County believes they hold title to an animal until they put it in your car. Not so says the UCC Code of California. That’s where we disagree. If they have title they can kill your dog in the parking lot. If you have title, they can’t. Where does title to property exchange ownership? Usually when compensation has been exchanged. Not so says Animal Control. Two weeks ago I paid for, had papers to #6 in my hand and he was still killed by Animal Control Ventura County. To be decided upon a later date.

This girl was pulled on a Wednesday and had to stay at the shelter until Monday, and could have died at anytime in between. We tried to protect her with a pull, but wasn’t recorded by staff. It is too dangerous to leave animals at that shelter for any reason. If a stink hadn’t been raised resulting in many eyes keeping watch on her, she might not be with us today. I pulled her today and transported her to Riverside to her new rescue, Adopt An Akita. She is safe, not many are at that shelter.

Update - August 22, 2011

This is mercy that I transported last week (August 18). She now has arrived at her new digs and looks tired, very hot, but happy and safe. To all in the chain, job well done!

It Was Panic Time - August 19, 2011

On Friday I pulled 10 dogs from the Ventura County Animal Shelter to open kennel space so other dogs would not be killed. The shelter is running at maximum with 185 dogs in the shelter at this time, there is no more room.
We scheduled these 10 dogs plus 8 other dogs to be in Castaic Junction for a 2pm pickup by a transport going to Oregon, Washington and Canada. With a total of 18 dogs present and waiting for pickup the came the call I was dreading, "we're full, sorry can’t take your dogs”. Ok, here we are with 18 dogs, in the heat and there were two of us. Oops doesn’t quite describe that moment of panic. After an hour of frantic phone calls, we found room at Carl's Pet Boarding in Santa Paula and Bartons Boarding in Sun Valley. So we loaded everyone up again and off to boarding we went. They will be reloaded on another smaller transport going north either Monday or Tuesday.
A Very Big Thank You to Rene, Maripat, Bonnie, the crew at Carl's and Rose at Bartons for helping out on a very hectic day. All ended well, at least for now.

Multiple Lives Saved Today - August 18, 2011

Today was very hectic transporting so many dogs to different places, in an effort to open space at the Ventura County Animal Shelter to keep the kill list down.
I transported 6 chihuahuas for a rescue to a vet in Simi Valley to be spayed and neutered.
Then I went to the shelter and pulled the husky that is pictured below. He will be transported to Utah by Best Friends Animal Society on Monday. I have to transport him to the collection point, in the meantime he is in boarding for safe keeping over the weekend.
Then I pulled two more (a terrier and a corgi mix) and transported them to a foster who lives way up in the hills in Studio City, near the big Hollywood sign (even the GPS got lost.)
Then I picked up the 6 chihuahuas from the vet in Simi Valley to be returned to their rescue after their surgery was completed.
All was accomplished and everyone was delivered where they were supposed to be - happy and safe! And I am exhausted.

Poor Ralph - August 17, 2011

Last week I transported Ralph down to Huntington Beach to his new foster mom, Jackie, and everything was fine. We had Ralph fixed prior to his going to foster and there didn’t seem to be any issue, well there was. Ralph developed an infection where they removed certain parts and we had to rush back down to pick him back up and take him to the vets that did theoriginal surgery. Ralph will remain up here with us for a few days recovering, then we will take him all the way back down again to his foster mom, hopefully fully recovered. But he seems to enjoy the long car rides so at least he gets something out of it.

   The Dirty Dozen - August 16, 2011

On Tuesday, August 16th the shelter called and said they were full and would have to start killing more dogs unless we could get some out to free up kennel space. Maripat worked her magic and we pulled and transported 12 dogs that day and into the evening. We transported them to the new fosters/kennels/rescues as needed. They were a mixture of chihuahuas, poodle mixes, corgi mixes, and a Jack Russell mix. All so sweet and very scared. Since it took almost 4 hours for the paperwork on these little guys most of the deliveries was after dark, so I couldn’t get any pictures. Just assume that they were as tired and hungry as I was by the end of the night. But they were safe and that’s what counts.

k-20 - August 15, 2011

Another of Ventura County's finest canines that was scheduled to be put to death last Friday. We manage to save him by saving other dogs and freeing up kennel space so he could live. We had to promise to get him out on Monday, and we did. He is going to a foster in Pacoima. I transported him on his first leg of his journey to Granada Hills and Brooke came up from downtown L.A. to drive him the final leg of his trip. He was a little confused, but was really liking all the attention. He thought this is really neat. After being in a kennel for a few weeks, all he wanted was lovin'. One down, and I have lost count of how many more to go. Just one dog at a time is all we can do.

Three Sisters For Tucson - August 12, 2011

These 3 are so cute and were so good on the ride to Baldwin Park. I just can’t say enough about them. They all went for walks and did their business while waiting for their big ride to show up. Glen just loves taking these guys for a ride in his big rig. Remember, they have never been near anything like this, let alone inside the cab. Glen lets them ride one at a time in the co-driver seat and I have been told it really is a thrill for them. They are moving with their new life in style.

A Very Last Minute Reprieve - August 12, 2011

I finally pulled this dog (#35) at 6:15 p.m. on a Friday. He was scheduled to be killed at the end of the day and so many people worked so hard on getting him out at the very last, I mean very last minute. I have had them killed while at the counter, paperwork completed, then the big oops. So this fella just made it out of the gate, literally. He was delivered to a wonderful foster mom who was in tears when he was delivered. If only #35 knew how hard people worked for him and how close he came to crossing the rainbow bridge.

Looks Can Be Deceiving - August 8, 2011

If you notice his little bitty paws are somewhat bunched up like a boxer. Well they were. He was going for round 1. This little guy was a terror in a kennel. Ever put your hand in a vegimatic?
(probably not). Well that’s what he did to me when I put my hand near him attempting to remove him from the kennel. He was all teeth. He won round one, I won round 2. Call it a draw. I did get him out finally and as this is not my first rodeo, he settled down after a bit. They do come out of the shelter sometimes really traumatized and one must have a lot of patience in dealing with them. hopefully he will get a week or two to settle down at new (temp) home and realize the world isn’t all bad. That there are some good people out there and Irma of Last Green Mile Rescue  is definitely one of them. He will come around in a few days and be ready for adoption and a new forever home. Thank You to Irma of Last Green Mile Rescue

First Class or Coach - August 6, 2011

These boys don’t realize how lucky they are. Once boarded, the flight is about 5 hours to Oregon and another hour to Washington versus 20 hours by ground. The dogs seen here come from all different shelters around Southern California, from Camarillo we managed to board 4 of our pit bulls on this flight. The plane will hold maybe 27 dogs of different sizes. Yes, are they squeezed in. Are they a little uncomfortable? Maybe. Considering the alternative they are very lucky indeed. The pilot, Yehuda, totally donates the entire flight at his expense. All we have to do is show up, proper documentation in hand and help load.

What a deal and he does this at least once a month. To say thank you Yehuda, somehow doesn’t seem enough, but it is all we have and all they have, so again we say thank you from all!

 The Night Drop - August 5, 2011

I made a another transport Friday night to Lamoor, CA with 8 dogs from the Camarillo shelter. Since this was a “night drop”, I don’t have any pictures. I finally got home at 2 a.m. and had to be back on the road at 5 a.m. for the fly away transport, so I was rather rushed in pulling all this together. We did it and 8 more will go on the a much better life. That’s what is all about.

August 4, 2011

This little lady doesn’t have a name. I received the call that she will be put down on Friday if not rescued today. To top it off, she was sick. Who is going to take a sick puppy on at the last minute, not knowing what the possible cost might be, no firm rescue to take her too. What to do? Well the person who stepped up and said enough is enough. Her name is Maripat Davis and she has many times stuck her neck out for these little guys, and she did it again. To say thank you seems just not enough. but it’s all I can say and really mean it. And yes I transported her to Westlake Animal Hospital for the care she has never known in her short life.

The Survivors  k-55 and k-85 - August 2, 2011

I went to the Camarillo shelter to pick up three dogs that had been pre-arranged for transfer to the Simi shelter for further transport to Tucson, AZ.

As we were filling out the paper work, I was informed that the staff had went ahead and killed the one we called k-6 as we had just completed his pull paperwork. It was that fast. One minute we had him almost saved, paperwork in hand. Next moment he was dead. It happened that fast. It was just an oops on the kennel staff's part. It was a big oops as far as I saw it.

Absolutely no dogs are safe in the Camarillo shelter, unless they are out the door and in your car. I did the evaluation on these three and came to know all of them well. Little number six weighed in at maybe 35 lbs. I could tell he had not seen much love in his short life and now he will see no more. This is not the first time this has happened and I am sure it won’t be the last. All we in rescue can do is strive for one more dog getting to safety. One dog at a time.
